The Harai Goshi was designed by Jigoro Kano to prevent people from stopping his deadly uki-goshi. Shiro Saigo found out a way to escape it by jumping forward. Kano figured out how to prevent it. He introduced a sweeping motion to catch the escaping foot.
How to perform a Harai Goshi?
- Use your left feet as the pivot point, rotate your body to the left, stretch your right leg out, and tense its big toe.
- Align the back of your right thigh against the front of the Uke’s right thigh. Ride them on your hips while you raise their right left by performing a scooping motion.
- Sweep your opponent over and to the ground. Build momentum by using both of your arms to pull. Also twist your entire body to throw them with enough speed and force.

O-Goshi is often the first throw taught to beginners. It’s one of the easiest way to throw your opponent with control and not risk an injury.
The O-Goshi consists in the Tori turning their hips, and putting them in front and lower than the opponent’s hips.
The tori would put one hand behind the Uke’s back and use the other one to pull their arm to the front to keep them out of balance.
Finally, the tori would lift their hips while continue to pull the Uke’s arm to the front and down. And the Uke will end up falling on the mat at the tori’s feet.
Is the o-goshi throw effective in a real fight? Of course, any throw can stop any opponent if they won’t fall on a mat. However, keep in mind that you will expose your back to your opponent if you don’t succeed at throwing them.

Daki Age (High Lift) *prohibited in competitions
The daki age is illegal in competitions and is no longer considered an official throw. It’s often seem as a throw that doesn’t require any skills and is often referred to as a slam.
It starts with the Uke on the floor with their legs around the Tori’s waist. Then, the tori would try to get up on their feet and pull the Uke up by their lapel. Finally, they would slam them on their back.
As you can tell, the Uke is in a position that’s hard for them to protect their spine, neck, and the back of their head. This could lead to a potential injury, and in some cases even end the Uke’s journey as a judoka. Most combats would be also be stopped as soon as the tori is standing up, making this a very hard technique to apply.
